A Life Cut Short Under Mysterious Circumstances
In the early hours of March 4, the residents of Fadama, a suburb in Accra Metropolitan District situated nearby Abeka, were plunged into mourning following the tragic death of a young woman whose life was reportedly taken by her own hand. Doris Nipa, as she was affectionately known in the neighbourhood, was discovered dead in her room, with traces of prescribed pain medication scattered across her bed.
Her co-tenants raised the alarm upon discovering her lifeless body, prompting the police to rush to the scene to investigate. The body was subsequently deposited at the 37 Military Hospital for an autopsy and further investigation to determine the exact cause of death, which, at the time of this report, remains unknown.
A Troubling Background of Persecution
The circumstances surrounding Doris’s death become even more troubling when examined against the backdrop of her recent history.
In April 2023, Doris was caught in a same-sex relationship with her partner, Leticia Adjei-Nkrumah, known locally as Leticia or simply “Let,” in Fadama and its surrounding communities. While Leticia managed to escape the scene, Doris was rescued and arrested by police after a witness called for help.
She was subsequently arraigned before the Accra High Court and sentenced to 11 months’ imprisonment. After serving her full term, she was released in October 2024.
A Community That Turned Its Back
However, freedom did not bring relief. Upon her release, Doris returned to a community that had fundamentally turned against her. Members of her family became deeply concerned over her noticeable withdrawal and the cold treatment she received from the very neighbourhood where she was born and raised.
According to reports, a significant portion of the community refused to sell to her, and many of her former close acquaintances had grown distant and hostile. The stigma followed her relentlessly.
Earlier in March, just days before her death, Doris was publicly hooted at in the Fadama market by market women who were familiar with her case. The humiliation was public, painful, and unrelenting.
A Mother’s Anguish and a Deteriorating Mind
Doris’s mother has revealed that her daughter’s mental health had severely deteriorated in the months following her release. She had been posting cryptic and deeply troubling messages on her WhatsApp status messages that, in hindsight, appeared to be cries for help.

These signs have led many to believe that Doris may have chosen to end her life rather than endure the unrelenting pain and ostracism she was subjected to daily.
Questions That Remain Unanswered
However, not everyone is convinced that Doris’s death was a suicide. Given the brutal treatment she endured at the hands of anti-LGBTQ+ vigilantes, who allegedly subjected her and Leticia to severe beatings and nearly killed them on the spot, there are those who believe that the same group may have been responsible for her death.
Suspicion lingers. The community is haunted by unanswered questions. Was Doris truly driven to take her own life, or was she silenced by those who could not tolerate her existence?
